Matthew Day, a local resident, was intrigued to discover if an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) integrated Google Pixel 9 could suggest a productive fishing spot in California. California Assemblywoman Gail Pellerin, on the other hand, requested the AI-powered device to create a playful image of her dog in front of the state capitol building.
Igor Gaspar engaged in a discussion with the Pixel 9 regarding economic inflation concerns. The Pixel 9, with its advanced capabilities, left many in Santa Cruz in awe and trepidation.
AFP visited the coastal city of Santa Cruz to gather reactions from passersby as they tested the features of the Pixel 9. With AI becoming increasingly integrated into products from tech giants like Google and Apple, this period is said to be a transformative time for smartphones.
Day shared his experience, “I asked it a question and it gave me a quick answer. That’s a lot better than the phone I have right now.”
Assemblywoman Pellerin was equally impressed, stating, “There are definitely some incredible tools that people would have available to them to do creative things and gather Product Information Management Software.”
However, concerns regarding potential misuse of AI were raised. Pellerin is backing state legislation aimed at preventing AI from being used for misinformation and deepfakes.
She added, “But I’m also concerned about nefarious uses of it, and we need to have those guardrails and regulations so it doesn’t cause havoc in any industries or communities or whatever.”
University of California, Santa Cruz, computer science professor Leilani Gilpin questioned the need for AI in smartphones and wondered if the AI’s confident responses might mask inaccurate information.
Gilpin stated, “Different language models hallucinate different information. So, the same thing is going to happen for people using this. Whether it’s for trivia or for generating images or other things, there’ll be some made-up information, and that’s just a way that the models work.”
Despite her concerns, Gilpin appreciated the benefits of AI features such as the Add Me tool that lets people take a photo of family or friends and add themselves in as though they were part of the group from the beginning.
She expressed, “I could see myself, as these tools become available, utilizing them more and more.”
Google, in response to potential controversy, appears to be taking steps to avoid it. The Gemini AI-powered digital assistant on the Pixel 9 declined to discuss elections or politics, and the image generation tool informed users it would not depict real people.
